Punxsutawney Phil and Groundhog Day
By Veronique VanblaereFebruary 2: Groundhog Day marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox. This day is originally called Candlemas, which is connected through ancient traditions to forecast the end of winter, The weather of this day predicts the arrival of spring.
I’m sorry to share that today, February 2nd, 2026, Punxsutawney Phil came out of his hole in Pennsylvania and saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter.
French and many Belgian people, celebrate La Chandeleur on the same day by eating crêpes, which is rooted in the same traditions and I’ll cover it in illustration in 2027.
