Japan series - Omikuji - original drawing

Omikuji are fortunes written on a piece of paper. They are purchased at Shintõ shrines, Buddhist temples or even vending machines.
You make an offering of a few coins and choose a fortune from the box.

You may get a bad fortune prediction, in that case, fold up the strip of paper and tie it onto a tree. Good fortunes can also be tied here, but tradition is to keep it in your wallet or purse.

The American fortune cookie is not Chinese but comes from this idea. The omikuji senbei, a fortune rice cracker dates back to the 1700’s in Kyõto Japan where they are still made today.

Drawing in ink and watercolor on watercolor paper. 5X7" matted to 8x10”.
