Maneki-neko means Beckoning cat in Japanese. Despite what you may think, he is not waving but asking you to “come over here!” In Japanese culture when you beckon someone to you, you lower your hand in the same downward position. The lucky cat is always a bobtail, the one lifting the left paw brings good fortune and money. The one lifting the right paw brings friendship and customers.
He is holding a large oval 10,000.000 ancient ryō coin, another symbol of fortune and prosperity.
