There are over 4 million vending machines around Japan, of which more than 2 million are selling drinks.
Why so many? The items offered for sale in them are cheap. Japan being a very safe country, even machines in a low-traffic area won’t get vandalized. Also, anyone can own a vending machine. They also are ideal for getting quick food or drinks for salary men, who only get minutes on their daily breaks.
